How to diversify your photography business

Many people think photographers only offer photo shoots, but in today’s digital world that isn’t the case. A photographer can offer many different products and services to diversify their business. This can help their business grow and stay strong through slower times throughout the year.

I have been a professional photographer for over 10 years and have learned ways to steadily grow my business. Here are four ways I have diversified my photography products and services.

1.    offer different types of photo shoots

TruBlu Images is a commercial photography company and we offer many different types of photo shoots. This helps us to not stay stagnant in one area of photography and to always have different clients and unique projects to work on. The different types of photo shoots that we offer are:

  • Food photography for restaurants, bars and breweries

  • Event photography for festivals, fundraisers, conferences and corporate events

  • Team photos and professional headshots

  • Product photography in a studio or lifestyle setting

  • Marketing and website photos for a service based business or non profit

  • Architectural and interior photos

2.    sell fine art prints

One way to profit from your photography talents is to sell prints online. I have sold my prints on my website and on Etsy. It takes a while to set it up, but once you do it can become a great source of passive income. I sell photos that I have taken from my world travels. My fine art prints are from New Orleans, Nicaragua, Mexico, Vietnam, Utah, Colorado, Greece and more. Offer different price points for your prints to attract an array of customers. You can also sell your prints on canvas or metal. Work with a professional printing service such as Miller’s Lab.

3.    sell photos on getty images

Stock photography websites make it easy to sell digital rights to your photos and make passive income. I sell a lot of my travel and landscape photography photos on Getty Images. For Getty Images, you must be accepted to be a contributor. You also have to have a photo release for any person or property that is recognizable in the photos. You will make more profit if the photos are made exclusively for Getty Images, that means you can’t sell or use the photos anywhere else. The more unique your photos are, the more they will get recognized and used. You also can see the trends of the types of photos people are purchasing. Make sure to be strategic about what photos you are uploading and selling.

4.  sell digital products

Digital products are very popular today. It seems like everyone is selling them on social media. It is important to create a digital product that provides a lot of value. People want to purchase something that can help them and make their lives easier. Some of the digital products I have created are a free photography checklist, a pitch deck that is an editable Canvas template, and a document on how to take your own headshot. All of these digital products help the user in some unique way.

Be sure to have a marketing plan for your digital products. Constantly share them on social media. Share how they help your life and others lives. You can even put them in your newsletter and post on LinkedIn. The more you share about them, the more you will sell.
